| Clinical Reflexology....Origins and uses Reflexology can be traced back as far as ancient Egypt, with a drawing being found of the ancient Egyptians receiving both hand and foot reflexology. Reflexology is used both for pure relaxation, stress relief and also to complement many modern medical treatments. It is known to improve blood circulation, therefore aiding healing. Whilst a reflexologist does not treat a specific complaint, by working the reflexes in the feet they can aid with current problems and it is particularly useful for speeding the healing process if you have undergone surgery of any kind as well as being effective for the relief of pains, such as back pains, headaches and toothache. It is used for the treatment of digestive disorders, stress and tension, the common cold, asthma, arthritis and many more common, everyday conditions. The actions of your reflexology therapist creates a soothing effect which brings nervous and muscular relief, The pressure applied to a particular point or nerve ending can create a sensation elsewhere in the body, indicating the connection or flow between the two points, This is the basis of reflexology, and although pain may not be alleviated immediately, continued reflexology treatments over periods of up to an hour will usually have a beneficial effect. Contra Indications There are some conditions for which Reflexology is inappropriate, including phlebitis (Inflammation of the veins) and Thrombosis, although your therapist may be able to help if they are working as part of your health care team, with the approval of your Doctor or Consultant. At your first treatment your therapist will discuss your medical history, general health and lifestyle and complete a medical questionnaire in order to find out what, if any, conditions you have and of course obtain medical approval from your Doctor if necessary prior to treating you. Did you know? Your feet contain over 7,000 nerve endings!
